Petunia TMV

Imagine a future where Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) in Petunia is a worry of the past.

Intrinsa® breeding with Petunias – Your best defense against TMV comes from the plant power within.

The pain

Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) is a highly transmittable virus that commonly infects Solanaceous plants, a plant family that includes many crops such as petunia, calibrachoa and tomato.  Symptoms may appear as necrotic lesions on leaves or stems, yellow mosaic pattern with lighter color veins, leaf distortion and flower break. TMV is spread easily by mechanical means; routine work activity is usually the culprit. It can also be spread by root or foliage contact.  The virus is very persistent. It can be infective as long as 8 years on bench tops and 50 years in dried plant material.  Outbreaks in our industry occur regularly and cause significant losses for growers and retailers.

The gain

There are no chemical treatments available, therefore natural resistance is required. Intrinsa® from Dümmen Orange brings varieties to the market using the science of advanced breeding where the desired approach for developing improved performance on high disease resistance is identified. As a result of this breeding approach, the Intrinsa® collection of petunia now offers you varieties with a natural defense against TMV infections from the plant power within. In trials under high infection levels our high resistant varieties show no to few mosaic symptoms and prevent the buildup of the virus inside the plant and transmission to other plants while susceptible varieties will show clear symptoms and don’t restrict the spread of the virus through the plant or to other plants.
