The Pain

Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) is a highly transmittable virus that commonly infects Solanaceous plants, a plant family that includes many species such as petunias, calibrachoas, and tomatoes.  Symptoms may appear as necrotic lesions on leaves or stems, yellow mosaic pattern with lighter color veins, leaf distortion and flower break. TMV is spread easily by mechanical means; routine work activity is usually the culprit. It can also be spread by root or foliage contact.  The virus is very persistent. It can be infective as long as 8 years on bench tops and 50 years in dried plant material.  Outbreaks in our industry occur regularly and cause significant losses for growers and retailers.
