Chrysanthemum Fusarium Wilt

Imagine a future where Chrysanthemum Fusarium Wilt is a worry of the past.

Intrinsa breeding with Chrysanthemums – Your best defense against Fusarium Wilt comes from the plant power within.

The pain

Fusarium wilt in chrysanthemum is caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. chrysanthemi. This pathogen can infect the plant through its roots and colonizes the vascular system, disrupting water and nutrient transport leading to wilting, yellowing, and eventual death of the plant. The disease is most prevalent in warm temperatures and high soil moisture content. It is particularly challenging to manage due to the its ability to survive in soil for extended periods. They infect and spread through contaminated soil, water, tools, poor sanitation practices and infected plant material.

The gain

Several prevention and management strategies (using disease-free planting material, chemical treatments, implementing proper sanitation practices) are available but cannot entirely eliminate the pathogen from the environment. In addition, chemical treatments may pose health hazards and are increasingly regulated. Hence natural resistance is required for complete eradication of Fusarium wilt. Intrinsa® from Dümmen Orange brings varieties to the market using the science of advanced breeding where the desired approach for developing improved performance on high disease resistance is identified. As a result of this breeding approach, the Intrinsa® collection of chrysanthemum now offers you varieties with a natural defense against Fusarium wilt from the plant power within. In trials under high infection levels with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. chrysanthemi our high resistant varieties show very few wilting symptoms while susceptible varieties will show clear symptoms which could ultimately lead to plant death.
